Being one of Sri Lanka‘s most arresting sites, the fortress of Lion Rock at Sigiriya is a gargantuan monolith honouring the country’s storied past.

No less powerful are the ancient paintings (frescoes) found within the monument. Although most were destroyed the ones that remain give visitors an insight into a transformative period of history which went a long way to shaping Sri Lanka’s destiny.
