Ancient art at Lion Rock

DSC_0058The fortress of Lion Rock is a gargantuan monolith honouring Sri Lanka’s storied past. Of the myriad sites to explore in the country, the site in Sigiriya is comfortably in the ‘must see’ camp.

Further up that particular list are the ancient paintings (frescoes) found within the monument. Although many were destroyed in an ancient purge a few remain. Most importantly, visitors will gain an insight into a transformational period which went a long way to shaping Sri Lanka’s destiny.

(Editor: We like ancient sites at EITM. Wat Phu Champasak, the colossal sentinel of Laos, is one of our favourites.)
