With plenty of coastal locations from which to choose, holidaymakers are spoiled for choice should they decide to visit Dorset. With something for everyone to savour – Bournemouth has the nightlife, Poole the space and Bridport the culture – it falls to Weymouth and its sister island Portland to provide the quintessential British seaside experience.
Beach-lovers are sure to enjoy Weymouth’s wares: in 2017, TripAdvisor users named the town as having the UK’s best beach. Thanks to its setting on the Jurassic Coast – a World Heritage Site – visitors have plenty of glorious walks to soak up the county’s charming beauty. Located to the south of Weymouth, Portland holds some cosmic significance. In 2013 the astronaut Chris Hadfield named it the one place on the planet he’d like to visit after spotting it from space. Although he wouldn’t have been able to make it out, the island offers plenty of scope for rock climbing and associated adventures. Meanwhile, Portland Bill stands proud as one of Dorset’s most iconic lighthouses.
